In Praise of the 10' Pole - July 22, 2018

The crew picked the cloud giant Duchess Sansuri who lives in a cloud castle called Lyn Armaal.  They were woken by the sound of stone grinding on stone followed by a loud stone crash.  When everyone went to the doors they were met by a gargantuan ancient blue dragon.  Harshnag told everyone to run while he ran toward the great beast, sword drawn.  Harshnag and the dragon were exchanging blows but Harshnag had no defense against the lightening breath weapon and he fell with smoke rising from his chest.  As the five humanoids, our heroes, were running for the north guard room, Ronan and Skithryx saw the blue dragon grab the trident from the storm giant statue, magically polymorph into a storm giant and touched the trident to the glyph on the portal arch for storm giants.  The portal activated and the giant or dragon stepped through.  The Tick and Ronan rushed to his side and gave him a healing potion and some magical healing.

Maggie raced into the north guardroom, jumped up and pushed off of the wall and launched her great hammer up at the gate lever currently in the down position.  The weapon connected with a mighty crack and shifted the massive handle by about a foot which didn’t even move it to horizonal.  Chamele and Skithryx continued to race down the hallway while the Tick, Ronan and a very weak Harshnag ran down the main entrance hallway.  Ronan looked up at Harshnag and in one look said “Trust my companions to open the gate”.  Maggie swung the hammer again and it connected and moved the lever up to halfway.  Skithryx and Chamele ran into the room and Maggie told Skithryx to get on her shoulders, which he did.  Chamele thought there might be a better way to do this but was hesitant to contradict Magdianna.  When they changed positions and Maggie raised Skithryx’ staff up to the lever, it connected with enough upward force that it moved the lever up to its “raised” position and the deep grinding of stone on stone told them that the gate was opened.  Of course, the equivalent force went down Skithryx’ spine.  "That’s going to need a heating pad after this is all over", Skithryx thought.  "Assuming we’re still breathing. "

The fear induced by the great lizard had worn off as they emerged into the icy air.  Their eyes blinded by daylight, lungs stung by cold, they stumbled back into the snow and were confronted by a shape they were not expecting.  A great red air balloon floating above a ship was anchored at the edge of the temple gates.  Humanoid figures could be seen moving with great haste, pulling in the anchored lines, apparently getting ready to leave.  They were waved over urgently and a woman’s voice yelled “We are leaving…if you want to live you won’t be here when she comes out!  Get aboard.”  They had to part ways with Harshnag…he was a too big for the airship.  Admiration and thanks filled everyone’s eyes at this parting.  As the airship made it’s escape Harshnag yelled “Make for Waterdeep.  Ask for Viari.  Heeeee caaaaaan heeeellllllp!”

With the southward journey underway, questions needed answering.  The kiptain of the wessel said “Greetings and thanks from our benefactor and master.  He has watched the conflict with the Giants with growing interest and is impressed and hopeful with the progress you have made in restoring order to the land.  He sends you a gift…use of this vessel and crew.  Use it to cross his vast dominion while avoiding the many perils of the lands below.  War against the giants is inevitable.  Slay their leaders and you may yet prevail."
In Waterdeep, our five adventurers enter the city and begin asking around for an adventurer named "Viari".  They get directions to a seedy bar where he frequents.  It does not take long for a voice behind them that takes everyone by surprise.   "What ho!"

  1. “Travel southeast to the untamed moors, and look to the sky for Lyn Armaal - the castle of the cloud giant countess. The conch you seek is in a secret chest. Search the highest spire!”
